The community-based Auwahi Forest Restoration Project works to restore diverse remnant dry forest in the Auwahi district, Maui island, Hawai’i. The Project operates on principles that involvement and support of local communities and scientific knowledge of ecological restoration and climate change are essential elements for durable conservation.
Dr. Medeiros, with over 30 years as a biologist with the National Park Service and US Geological Survey, is considered a regional expert in restoration ecology, Hawaiian biota, ethnobotany and naturalhistory. He founded the Auwahi project bringing together critical early stakeholders to attempt one of the first large-scale forest restoration projects in the Hawaiian Islands.
