Eyes on the Reef: coral reef bleaching, recovery and change in West Hawaii

October 30, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

bleached coral

In the fall of 2015, coral reefs in West Hawaii faced a massive and unprecedented coral bleaching event due to very high and extended seawater temperatures. By the winter of 2016, approximately half of the coral in West Hawaii had died because of this event.  Since then, the staff at the Eyes On the Reef Network and the Division of Aquatic Resources have worked to better understand the current status of our coral reefs and how to best facilitate coral recovery on a local scale.  Lindsey Kramer is the Hawaii island Coral Reef Monitoring Coordinator for the DAR and manages the Hawaii Island EOR community reporting network, she will speak on the topic of coral reef bleaching, coral spawning events, and pilot studies in coral larval rearing.  Please join us to hear more about Kona’s coral reefs and how you can help preserve them.

All programs are subject to change. If you require an auxiliary aid or accommodation due to a disability, please contact the library at least 7 days before the program date.
