teen haiku contest

For Poetry Month 2024, Lihue Public Library is hosting a Teen Haiku Challenge.  Pick up entry forms at Lihue Public Library.  Submissions accepted at Lihue Public Library until Tuesday, April 30th, 4pm. 1 entry per person.

A mere 17 syllables in length, haiku is one of the world’s smallest works of art. But don’t be misled by its miniature size. This deceptively simple verse is packed with emotional power and comes from a long history.  We will be using the 5 syllable-7 syllable -5 syllable format.

Haiku, in its most ancient form, dates back to seventh-century Japan, where it was written—and chanted—to mark ocean voyages, praise emperors, and celebrate special harvest days.

Writing haiku is not as simple as it looks. It requires meticulous craftsmanship on the part of the poet—whether he or she is seven years old or 70!

All submissions will be placed on display in the Teen Section with the permission of the artist.  1 entry per person.

Prize will be given for the best Haiku – to be judged by local poets.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required.
