Saving the Endangered Monk Seal: Fieldwork in the Northwestern Islands

June 17, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

seal on rocks in ocean

NOAA’s Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program deploys volunteers to several of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands each summer to monitor monk seals and evaluate recovery of this critically endangered species. This past May, Andy Collins was fortunate to assist with a camp deployment mission and sailed up to the first three islands in Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument aboard the NOAA Ship -Oscar Elton Sette. During the eight day mission, visited Nihoa Island with a cultural expert to look for an invasive and potentially damaging grass. Andy Collins’ lecture will focus on recovery efforts for seals, his experience on this mission. He will share many images and some video of this special place.

If you need an auxiliary aid/service or other accommodation due to a disability, please contact the library at least 7 days prior to the program date. We will make every attempt to fulfill all requests for accommodations. All programs are subject to change.
