Tyva Kyzy: The Daughters of Tuva Concert

June 15, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Members of Tyva Kyza on hillside

Tyva Kyzy, founded by Choduraa Tumat in 1998, is recognized as the first group of women to perform throat-singing, still considered to be a domain of male singers, and a tradition of nomadic people of Central Asia. Throat-singing, generally known as khoomei in Tuva and parts of Mongolia, uses the throat, nose, tongue and chest to produce sounds that can mimick water, wind, thunder and other sounds of nature. The group also performs “traditional voice” songs and all are outstanding instrumentalists.

This program will be held in the main lobby of the Hawaii State Library.

Sponsored by: University of Hawaii Outreach College Statewide Cultural Extension Program, The East-West Center, The Friends of the Library of Hawaii and the Hawaii State Public Library System.

All programs are subject to change. If you require an auxiliary aid or accommodation due to a disability, please contact the library at least 7 days before the program date.
